Reiki is usually translated as “Universal Life Force Energy”, similar to Prana, Qi, and Chi in other traditions. It simply and beautifully gives your bodymind more resource to heal, balance, and recharge.
“Reiki is one of the Buddhist offspring of Qigong with added Shintoist influence. It was recovered by Mr. Mikao Usui of Kyoto, Japan toward the end of the 19th century and it was he who named it “Rei-Ki”. In Japanese the character Rei stands for holy, spirit, mystery, gift, nature spirit or invisible spirit, and the character Ki means energy, nature scene, talent and feeling.” (Reiki Fire by Frank Arjava Petter)
*It is important to note that although Reiki has Eastern roots it is in no way affiliated with any belief system, religion, or religious practice nor is it based on suggestion.*
Reiki is steeped in a rich and somewhat secret history of tradition custom to Japanese culture. Mikao Usui passed the practice down to his student and it has since been passed down from teacher to student with respect to tradition within an attunement ceremony. Once a practitioner has been attuned (same concept as tuning into to a radio station in order to receive music) they are then able to connect to the Reiki energies and act as a pathway so that this universal life energy can flow to those who can benefit from it.
What do the different levels of Reiki mean? The tradition, study and practice of Reiki is passed down in levels. A student first begins with Level I which attunes to the physical healing energies. Level II attunement allows for emotional healing energies. The Reiki Master level or Level III connects the practitioner to spiritual healing energies. Reiki Teacher Training is available and is the last attunement. The Reiki Master title is again based in tradition, practitioners do not consider themselves "masters" of the practice by any means. It is just that, a practice, one in which can always be improved upon through growth and learning.
Reiki is able to:
Boost your life force energy
Clear stuck or stagnant energy patterns
Heal on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level
Balance Chakras so that the subtle systems of the bodymind can operate more harmoniously
Reiki is a subtle yet powerful facilitator of healing and change. Most clients report deeper relaxation, warmth, a sense of light or feeling a sense of lightness, and an overall well-being during their treatment. Some clients say that they “can’t feel anything happening” which is completely normal and does not mean that the Reiki is not doing its great work, only that for some it takes time to learn how to notice it.
A full Reiki session is performed with the client lying down and fully clothed. If you are not comfortable or unable to lay then accommodations can be made. It is a great complement to massage or any other therapy as it prepares the body for deeper relaxation and healing. Reiki can be administered through light touch or with the hands slightly above the body if you are uncomfortable with touch.
Reiki is great for:
Post-surgery, injury or illness to speed and optimize recovery
Improving the quality of your sleep
Helps to ease emotional traumas
Neutralize the effects of stress and anxiety
Naturally boosts your energy
I do incorporate Reiki into Massage and Intuitive Healing Sessions. I also offer Reiki trainings for all levels for self care and/or practitioners through out the year.
